Upadeśa Pañchakam. Five Instructions to The Mind
Śrīla Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswāmī Mahārāj
A Sanskrit composition by Śrīla Gurudev first published in his Rachanāmṛta.
yadi re mānasa sajjana-saṅge
majjanam ichchhasi nāma-taraṅge
tv aniśaṁ bhaja taṁ budha-saṁsargam
O mind, if you desire to be immersed within the Name’s waves in the sādhus’ association, then leave the inescapable prison of sin (māyā) and constantly serve the sādhus.
chechchhasi yadi kuru sat-pada-varaṇam
niravadhi rādhaya taṁ hari-dāsam
If you desire the Lord’s feet, which are like rain-clouds in the desert of your scorched heart, then take shelter at the sādhus’ feet. Stop enjoying in the company of sinners and constantly serve the Lord’s servants.
durlabha-tanum iha labdhvā tūrṇaṁ
yo bhajati harim-akhila-rasa-pūrṇam
sarva-guṇair api muktis tasya
karatala-lagnā bāliśa paśya
O fool, look! One who attains a rare human body and immediately serves the Lord, who is replete with all rasas, has all qualities and liberation in the palm of his hand.
jñātvā mūḍha tvaktvāsaktim
tvaritaṁ tvaṁ vraja mānasa śaraṇam
O foolish mind, know wealth, family, life, and the body to be temporary. Abandon attachment to them and immediately take shelter of the Lord’s feet, which are worshipped by Śiva, Śuka, and Nārad.
kuru hari-saṅkīrtanam anubandham
Break out of the snake-trap of material existence, drink the elixir of the Name, and constantly engage in Hari-saṅkīrtan according to the desires of Śrī Rūpa’s worshippable followers.
